Botox or injection of Botulinum toxin type A, is the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox, or selective muscle denervation, as it is medically referred to, is the act of muscle contractions when a nerve sends a signal to it. The meeting point of the nerve and muscle is termed as the neuromuscular junction. A chemical called acetylcholine is released through the nerve side junction that binds to the muscle side junction creating a chemical reaction to contract the muscle. Botox works by jamming the acetylcholine receptors on the muscle side of the junction, to stop contractions. Acetylcholine cannot bind anywhere on the muscle when the nerve sends a signal to the muscle to contract. The muscle fails to contract and is paralyzed without nerve or muscle damage.
The clinical effects begin between 5 to 10 days after Botox injection has been induced. It takes 3 to 5 months for the muscle to develop a new receptor site, at which point contractions will begin again.
How Long Does A Botox Injection Last?
The effects of Botox last for at least 6 months. When the injection’s effects on the wear off, the lines and wrinkles will begin to show up again and a new treatment will be needed. When muscles get used to this kind of treatment, the lines and wrinkles usually seem to be less severe.
